The fungus that infects the nail comes under the category of Dermatophytes. There are many different types of toenail fungus and they are called different things based on the area in which the infection begins.
Foot Fungus Types
- Distal Subungual Onychomycosis
- White Superficial Onychomycosis
- Candida Onychomycosis
- Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis.
Distal Subungual Onychomycosis
The most common type of infection that is caused in the nail is called Distal Subungual Onychomycosis (DSO). This is the type of fungus that most people who get Athlete’s Foot have.
How it Occurs
The skin under the nail gets infected by this fungus, and it starts infecting the nail. The color of the nail after the infection begins looks white or yellow. You will start to see the nail beginning to split into pieces or fragmenting and this causes a crumbling of the nail structure over time. Then you will see the nail separate from the skin.
A person who is affected by this type of nail fungus might find it extremely difficult to wear shoes and socks. The reason is that when you wear socks the nail may get between the fabric and it may cause pain you significant pain. Wearing shoes and walking with this condition becomes very difficult for the affected person. Over time this infection only gets worse if they decide to start wearing shoes with this condition. The infection may also get serious at this point and it becomes extremely difficult to cure. However, you can find and buy and use add on cushions in your shoes that will make wearing them more comfortable while you seek treatment.
White Superficial Onychomycosis
The other common type of infection that is caused by a rampant fungus is the White Superficial Onychomycosis. This type of infection is the second most popular type of infection you can get. It occurs in the upper layer of the nail. This causes the top layer of the nail to turn to a white color. Initially you only see white spots on the nail. As days pass the white spot then start turning into a white powder or it crumbles. With this type of infection, the nail does not disintegrate from the skin instead it remains thin instead of getting thick as in the other types of fungus infections. However, when you are ready to cure it, you will find that it is very easy to cure, much easier than other types of infections.
Most people wonder what is the worst kind of fungus that you can get. The answer is Candida Onychomycosis. This is more often found in the fingernail as opposed to the toenail.
In this type of infection the nail gets infected by yeast called Candida.
How it’s Starts
This infection starts near the skin that is near the nail border. This infection you will start to see the toenail separating from nail bed. The worst case of this not only affects one nail but all of them. The color of the nail changes to different colors like white, green, or even a brown. The skin next to the nail may start to look swollen and this is an indication of the infection. As with the other types of fungal infections this infection may cause pain in the infected area.
Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis
Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis (PSO) is the other type of fungal nail infection that is caused by the Dermatophytes. It is the least common type of infection. People who are infected with HIV are the people who most often get this type of fungal infection. The nail folds are infected and the skin thickens separating the nail from the skin. Often white coloring of the nail may occur and the top skin of the foot may get affected.
